Influence today
The Roman legionaries equipment and tactics have had quite a lot of influence over the years, but not in battle as some might think. The Romans battle tactics have most greatly influenced the riot police of the world (or so I think) this can be seen most prominently when you look at the similarities in their equipment.

The Romans battle tactics have most greatly influenced the riot police of the world (or so I think) this can be seen most prominently when you look at the similarities in their equipment.
Their helmets are much alike as are there shields because, as the Romans and now the riot police discovered a curved shield makes it much easier to deflect objects like spears in the Romans case, or stones and bottles in the riot polices case.
You can also see Roman influence in the tactics the riot police use to break up crowds and to protect themselves, like the tortoise, which is a formation where the men cover themselves and each other with their shields to protect themselves from flying objects, like arrows or stones. Another tactic that both used is the arrow head formation, it is used to break through enemy lines. Here is a picture of it in action.
Also the discipline that the riot police display is much like the Romans, they almost never run and are almost always outnumbered, so you see the Roman army is still alive and kicking, we only have to look for it.
