Vexillarius, a standard bearer, gets his name from the type of standard (a flag) he carries, the Vexillum is the name of the standard/flag, there are other types of standard bearers, like the Aqulifer, he also gets his name from the type of standard he carries, the aquila (the 'eagle') also the Signifier he too gets his name from the standard he cares called the Signum.
Perhaps the most known Roman solder is the legionary. The legionary formed the back bone of the Roman army, and have become one of the most widely known infantry men of all time.
The Optio was the second in command of a century. Unlike the centurion’s, the Optio’s equipment and armour differed little from that of the ordinary soldier. The main indicator of his rank, was the Optio’s staff. It’s generally believed that the main use of this staff was to help in arranging men in ranks and columns.

The Centurion was the commander of 100 men, and was a man of considerable importance on the battle field, as he made a lot of the decisions.
The Legatus was the commander of a legion (1000 men). He would be of senatorial rank.
